Ondo Gov election marred by controversy as PDP candidate expresses distrust in INEC

The highly anticipated Ondo governorship election has kicked off on Saturday amidst controversy, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Agboola Ajayi, casting doubts on the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fair poll. After casting his ballot at his polling unit in Ese-Odo LGA, Ajayi voiced his concerns to reporters, citing the commission’s slow pace as a deliberate attempt to rig the election.
“The system is not perfect, things are not working,” Ajayi said. “A lot of complaints here and there… INEC cannot organise elections in just one state.” He further alleged that Oluwatoyin Babalola, the state’s resident electoral commissioner (REC), had met with Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the incumbent governor, and the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), raising suspicions of collusion.
Ajayi’s distrust in INEC was palpable as he stated, “I think it’s deliberate on the part of INEC and the part of the REC. We can’t trust you. The system is compromised, people are complaining about vote buying, BVAs are not working, it’s very shameful.” He called for the resignation of INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, if he cannot ensure a credible election, labeling the situation “embarrassing” and “sad.”
The PDP candidate also criticized the presence of armed military officers at polling stations, claiming their proximity intimidated voters. Despite the challenges, Ajayi expressed confidence in his chances, stating he would win the election “convincingly.” He faces stiff competition from 16 other candidates, including incumbent governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The Ondo governorship election has drawn significant attention, with 17 candidates vying for the top spot.
