“A Life of Silent Service”: Tinubu Mourns Buhari, Lauds His Patriotism in Solemn Tribute

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday led tributes to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose deep-seated patriotism was expressed not through rhetoric, but through a lifetime of selfless action and unwavering devotion to Nigeria.

Speaking at a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held in Buhari’s honour at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu offered a moving reflection on his predecessor’s life and legacy, declaring that Buhari’s “patriotism was lived more in action than in words.”

The late Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, passed away on July 13 in London following a prolonged illness. His burial, conducted in Daura, Katsina State on Tuesday, followed Islamic rites and drew tributes from around the world.

As part of the honours, President Tinubu announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to bear the name of the former president—an enduring symbol, he said, of Buhari’s national service.

“Today, we gather under a heavy shadow, drawn from the silence that surrounds a departed leader and the immense weight of a life whose absence will be felt for generations,” Tinubu began solemnly. “We meet to honour a man whose presence once commanded this very room… whose convictions never bowed, even to the strongest winds of public opinion.”

The FEC gathering brought together top Nigerian dignitaries including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibril, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Head of the Civil Service Dr. Didi Walson-Jack, and governors from Kwara, Imo, and Katsina States. Buhari’s children were present, although his widow, Dr. Aisha Buhari, was absent as chief mourner.

Reflecting on Buhari’s personality and values, President Tinubu said: “He was first among soldiers in war, first among citizens in peace, and first, without ambition or flattery, in the hearts of his fellow citizens… To his peers, he was respectful and without pretence. To those who served under him, he was kind without condescension.”

“Even in death, he maintained the serenity that defined him in life: not a sigh, not a groan, just a quiet submission to the will of God. Such was the man Nigeria has lost. Such was the man for whom our nation now mourns.”

He described Buhari as a leader whose inner strength, moral clarity, and simplicity set him apart in an era often dominated by noise and spectacle.

“Steady in posture and spirit, dignified in bearing, and commanding by his very presence, his example guided all who encountered him. Still, it endures,” Tinubu noted. “His life was a quiet courage, a righteousness that never announced itself.”

The President highlighted key moments in Buhari’s national journey—from his early days as a young soldier fighting for Nigeria’s unity, to governing the North-Eastern State, chairing the Petroleum Trust Fund, and later becoming Nigeria’s first opposition candidate to unseat an incumbent president.

“From the battlefield to the corridors of power, he remained faithful to the task… administered the Petroleum Trust Fund with Spartan rigour and complete fidelity to the public good,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu also credited Buhari with helping birth Nigeria’s democratic rebirth through their joint formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We stood together, he and I… we formed an alliance that enabled Nigeria to experience its first true democratic transfer of power. When he was sworn in… he led with restraint, governed with dignity, and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.”

“When his tenure ended, he returned to Daura… never seeking to impose his will but content to let others carry the nation forward.”

In one of the most poignant moments of his tribute, Tinubu acknowledged Buhari’s imperfections, but praised the strength of his moral compass and lifelong dedication to country and faith.

“President Buhari was not a perfect man—no leader is—but he was, in every sense of the word, a good man, a decent man, an honourable man… The character he brought to public life… the incorruptible standard he represented, will not be forgotten.”

He concluded with a heartfelt farewell: “Now, he rests. And we who remain must carry the memory of his life as a standard to guide us… Let us honour him not only with words, but with humility in power, discipline in service, compassion in governance, and fearlessness in the pursuit of justice.”

“Mai Gaskiya, The People’s General, the Farmer President—your duty is done.”

The nation, Tinubu said, bids farewell to one of its most faithful servants. As Nigeria reflects on Buhari’s decades-long public service, his quiet legacy will echo far beyond the halls of power he once walked.
