Obi: Embracing ADC Was a Tough but Necessary Step for Nigeria’s Future

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Mr. Peter Obi, has admitted that the decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the upcoming general elections was not taken lightly, but was born out of a strong conviction that Nigeria needs a new, united political front to address its deepening challenges.

Speaking on Thursday via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi explained that the adoption of ADC as the political platform for the 2027 elections by members of a newly formed coalition came after “deep reflection” and intense consultations.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola serving as the National Secretary,” Obi wrote.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he stated.

The coalition, made up of some of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai—officially unveiled their support for ADC as a united political vehicle during an event in Abuja on Tuesday.

Obi emphasized that their coming together reflects a shared determination to reshape Nigeria’s future through collective effort and selfless leadership.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” he declared.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, who has already signaled that he intends to serve a single term if elected, reiterated that broad collaboration is essential for tackling the country’s entrenched problems.

“To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are uneasy,” he concluded.

With the formation of this new coalition and the endorsement of the ADC, Nigeria’s political landscape is set for a dynamic realignment ahead of 2027, as key political figures converge around a common vision of leadership renewal and national rebirth.
