Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition, Dismisses VP Speculation with Atiku

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency again in the 2027 general elections, firmly shutting down rumours suggesting he might serve as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi was unequivocal about his plans: “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he stated.
When asked about ongoing speculation regarding a possible alliance with Atiku under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi dismissed the reports as unfounded.
“This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C,” he clarified.

While reaffirming his commitment to the Labour Party, Obi also acknowledged his participation in a broader coalition of opposition forces — including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — working toward presenting a united front against the current administration in 2027.
“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” he said.
Obi’s statement comes amid growing political realignments and the emergence of coalition talks aimed at mounting a formidable challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
With this declaration, Peter Obi has now positioned himself as a key contender in what is expected to be a highly competitive and consequential presidential race in 2027.
