Nollywood Pays Tribute to Legendary Actor Charles Olumo, “Agbako”

Social media has erupted with heartfelt tributes for the esteemed veteran Nollywood actor Abdulsalam Sanyaolu, affectionately known as Charles Olumo or “Agbako,” following the announcement of his passing.
On Thursday, the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) shared the news on Instagram via a statement from its president, Bolaji Amusan, widely known as Mr. Latin. He wrote, “#tampanglobal announces the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as AGBAKO. Details of the burial arrangements will be shared at a later time. Good night father, 25/02/1923 to 31/10/2024.”
Actor Jide Kosoko expressed his sorrow, writing: “Good night ooo, Baba Charles. a.k.a Agbako, 101 years, ba wasa ba. R I P.”
Fellow actor Kunle Afod added, “Good night pa Charles Olumo (Baba Agbako), the oldest actor. 101 years, Sun re ooo, O dabo, O di Oju Ala.”
Nollywood actress Funke Akindele remarked, “Awwwwwwww may his soul rest in peace. Wow. Oluwa tobi loba.”
Film Maker and Movie Distributor Kazim Adeoti also paid his respects, saying, “May his soul rest in peace. Orun ‘re o Baba.”
Actress Biodun Okeowo, known as Omo Butty, shared, “Rest well sir. No matter how old our loved ones are, we never want to see them go! Kudos boss Afod for all you do.”
Born in 1923, Agbako was a cherished figure in the Yoruba film industry, renowned for his compelling portrayals of characters ranging from chiefs to warriors and villains.
He began his career in stage plays and transitioned smoothly to film as the industry evolved, becoming an influential figure in Nollywood’s formative years. His unforgettable roles in classics like Ogbori Elemosho and Atorunmo enchanted audiences for decades, solidifying his legacy as a Yoruba film icon.
Agbako celebrated his 101st birthday earlier this year.
