NMA Urges Governor Uba Sani to Secure Release of Kidnapped Kaduna Doctor

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna State Chapter, has appealed to Governor Uba Sani to take immediate action to secure the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a resident doctor abducted over seven months ago from the National Eye Centre, Hospital Quarters.

The appeal was made by the State Chairman of the NMA, Dr. Madaki Sheyin, during a press briefing on Monday in Kaduna.

Dr. Sheyin expressed deep concern over the rising number of kidnappings involving medical professionals and their families, urging the government to address these troubling incidents urgently. He stated, “Despite assurances from both state and federal security agencies about efforts to secure her release, Dr. Ganiyat, a breastfeeding mother, remains in captivity. Reports of her deteriorating health and the harsh conditions she faces highlight the need for intensified efforts from all relevant security apparatuses to ensure her release.”

Dr. Sheyin called on the Governor, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, to intervene immediately. “We call on the Governor to save Dr. Ganiyat and reunite her with her family and colleagues. It is crucial that all health facilities across the state, including primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, are well-secured to ensure the safety of healthcare workers who provide essential services around the clock.”

He further noted, “The NMA is working on a security and kidnap prevention advisory for our members. As we approach our Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference on August 10th, with the theme ‘Enhancing Healthcare Delivery Amidst Challenges: Strategies for a Sustainable Medical Practice in Nigeria,’ we recognize the significant challenges facing our healthcare system. This calls for collective efforts to address these issues and improve healthcare delivery.”

Dr. Sheyin acknowledged the current administration’s focus on healthcare improvements, despite financial constraints and past mismanagement. “We trust that Governor Uba Sani will continue to advance the healthcare sector and achieve better health outcomes. The upcoming conference will include a sub-theme on safety and legal issues in medical practice, delivered by a renowned Professor of Medical and Health Law, to better inform members and the public about professionalism and ethical issues.”

The forum also urged its members to remain vigilant and continue providing emergency services amid the ongoing nationwide protests. “We advise members to be security-conscious and avoid being caught up in any unrest. We call on the government to maintain its commitment to healthcare and address the economic challenges affecting the affordability of quality services,” Dr. Sheyin concluded. “Politicians and statesmen should prioritize the interests of the poor and vulnerable, while doctors must uphold their oath and work towards improving the nation’s healthcare system.”
