Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended three individuals suspected of engaging in illegal gold mining activities in Borno State.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement shared on the agency’s X (formerly Twitter) platform on Tuesday, detailing how the suspects were tracked and detained.

According to the EFCC, the operation took place in Mallam Jakwa Town in Hawul Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on the suspects’ activities.

The statement read, “Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested three suspected illegal gold miners in Borno State.

“They were arrested in Mallam Jakwa Town, Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State, following actionable intelligence on their illegal activities.”

The agency identified the suspects as Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila.

Highlighting the broader impact of their actions, the EFCC noted, “Their suspected illegal mining activities are worsening insecurity and environmental degradation in the state.

“Items found in their possession upon their arrest include a small gold measuring machine and mined gold,” the statement added.

The commission also indicated that legal proceedings will follow once investigations are concluded.
