A coordinated security operation involving the Kebbi State Police Command, the military and other security agencies has thwarted an attempted cattle-rustling attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits in Bunza Local Government Area of the state, resulting in the death of one suspect.

The incident occurred when the bandits reportedly stormed Tungan Babu Lada village, where they shot and killed a 35-year-old resident, Usman Ferungu, before making away with rustled cattle.

Their escape was short-lived, however, as a joint security team swiftly mobilised and pursued the attackers.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the operation was led by the Divisional Police Officer of Kangiwa Division.

“The team led by the Divisional Police Officer of Kangiwa Division, the operatives pursued the fleeing suspects and intercepted them at Garin Mayo Mine,” the statement said.

According to the police, the encounter escalated into a gun duel between security operatives and the suspects.

“A gun battle ensued during which one of the suspected bandits was neutralized, while four motorcycles believed to have been used by the criminals were recovered,” the statement added.

Police authorities said the timely response by the joint team successfully disrupted the bandits’ operation, prevented further attacks in the area and averted additional loss of lives.

The Kebbi State Police Command reiterated its resolve to sustain intensive patrols and intelligence-led operations across the state, in line with the proactive policing strategy of the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Mohammed Hadeija.

The command also appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing prompt and credible information, assuring the public that concerted efforts were ongoing to deny criminal elements freedom of action in Kebbi State.
