Captain Adeola Sowemimo: Nigeria’s Trailblazing Female Boeing 787 Pilot Breaking Barriers in Aviation”

In a profession historically dominated by men, Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo stands out as a trailblazer. At just 31, she has achieved a groundbreaking milestone as Nigeria’s first female Boeing 787 Dreamliner pilot, flying long-haul routes for Qatar Airways.
Her journey from Kaduna to the cockpit of one of the world’s most advanced aircraft is a testament to her grit and passion. The Boeing 787, capable of reaching speeds up to 1,024 kilometers per hour, carries 250 passengers across continents under Adeola’s skilled command.
Born on October 16, 1990, in Kaduna, Adeola’s early life was marked by adversity, including frequent relocations due to religious conflicts. Despite these challenges, she excelled academically and pursued her passion for aviation with unwavering resolve. She began her studies at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology but soon redirected her focus to aviation, training at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology and later at Sunrise Aviation Inc. in Florida.
Returning to Nigeria in 2013, Adeola started her career as a First Officer with Medview Airlines, quickly advancing to pilot the Boeing 767-300ER. Her career took a significant leap in 2018 when she became the first Nigerian woman to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with Qatar Airways.
Adeola’s achievements extend beyond her professional life. Balancing her role as a wife and mother with her demanding career, she exemplifies the possibility of achieving both personal and professional success. Married to Seun Funmi Olamilekan Sowemimo since April 22, 2017, she manages her dual roles with remarkable skill.
Captain Adeola Sowemimo is more than a pioneering pilot; she is a beacon of hope and perseverance. Her story inspires young African girls and women everywhere, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, no dream is too distant. Her legacy is a powerful reminder that breaking barriers is not only possible but also transformative for future generations.
