Osun Group Demands Speaker Egbedun’s Resignation, Impeachment Over Threat to Monarch

A civil society organisation, Osun Justice for All Forum, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, to resign from office following the circulation of a leaked audio in which he allegedly threatened the life of Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac, the Alasi of Asi, in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.

The group, in a statement by its convener, Ajibade Adeshina on Wednesday, described the content of the audio as “despicable, reckless, and a dangerous abuse of power,” warning that if the Speaker fails to resign, members of the Osun State House of Assembly must initiate impeachment proceedings without delay to “salvage the honour and dignity of the House and rescue the state from ridicule.”

The voice in the audio, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, is alleged to be that of Speaker Egbedun. It is heard issuing a direct threat to the monarch in coarse, menacing language, raising serious questions about his temperament and fitness to hold public office.

“The voice note purportedly attributed to the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly could not have emanated from a responsible leader occupying such an exalted office, especially not when the vitriol in question is hurled at a traditional ruler, and not just any monarch, but one from his very hometown,” the group said.

While acknowledging that the audio has not been officially verified, Osun Justice for All Forum maintained that the Speaker’s well-documented history of abusive behaviour toward traditional rulers, journalists, and lawyers makes the allegations entirely believable.

“A moment of introspection into the Speaker’s antecedents and general disposition towards traditional institutions may compel a reconsideration of that restraint,” the group noted.

This is not the first time Speaker Egbedun has come under fire for his conduct. In February 2025, he drew widespread condemnation for his disparaging comments about the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdulrasheed Ayotunde Olabomi Odundun, after the monarch raised concerns about a government white paper on chieftaincy matters. In response, Egbedun publicly declared that “he [the Aragbiji] is not above the law and must remember that he remains a subject of the governor,” while also dismissing the royal father’s media briefing as “media theatrics that reveal his lack of civility.” He described the king’s position as “laughable and lamentable,” and warned that “should he allow his pride to cloud his judgment, he shall face the consequence.”

The remarks, widely shared across media platforms, were condemned as a blatant affront to Yoruba cultural institutions.

In its statement, Osun Justice for All Forum also catalogued several previous incidents involving the Speaker, including allegations of physical assault on journalists, verbal attacks on lawyers, and the use of inflammatory and uncouth language against critics and political opponents.

The group has now turned its call toward the state’s chief executive, Governor Ademola Adeleke, urging him to disown Speaker Egbedun’s conduct and take decisive action to distance his administration from what it called “a growing source of shame and disrepute.”

“We are calling on Governor Ademola Adeleke to wean his administration of the embarrassment Adewale Egbedun has become. The Speaker is not only tainting the image of the House of Assembly but dragging the entire Adeleke-led government into needless controversy. The governor must act decisively, before this toxic behaviour consumes the credibility of his administration.”

According to the Forum’s convener, the Speaker has become “a moral burden on the Assembly and an embarrassment to the good people of Osun State.”
“We cannot afford to sit back and watch a man whose conduct mocks civility and decency desecrate both our political institutions and our cultural heritage. The Speaker must resign within 48 hours. Failing which, we urge the honourable members of the Osun State House of Assembly to do the needful by commencing impeachment proceedings without delay.”

The group further warned that power must be exercised with dignity, noting:

“As the Yoruba proverb goes, ‘if the field fails to expose a man, the home will.’ Speaker Egbedun must be reminded that long after the gavel falls silent, he will return to the same traditional institutions he now disparages.”

As public outrage grows, political observers in Osun say the coming days may be decisive for both Speaker Egbedun and the House of Assembly, as calls for accountability rise. The Speaker has not issued an official statement on the leaked audio at the time of filing this report.
