ADC adopts “wait-and-see” approach as Rivers impeachment crisis intensifies

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has signaled that it will not be rushed into a partisan stance regarding the fresh attempt to remove Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office. Instead, the party is opting for a meticulous observation of the legal and political maneuvers currently shaking the state.

Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, made this known during an interaction with the press, where he emphasized the need for a balanced evaluation before the party releases an official statement.

Addressing the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach both the Governor and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, Abdullahi remarked:

“We’re studying the political development in Rivers. Let us study it, see what happens and then take an informed position on the matter.”

The party’s cautious tone comes at a time when other political actors are already picking sides in the deepening rift between the executive and the legislature in the oil-rich state.

The impeachment fire was reignited on Thursday during a high-profile plenary session led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule. Broadcast live on Channels Television, the session saw the assembly leadership formally table a petition detailing allegations of gross misconduct against the Governor.

The legislative leadership has maintained that the process is being steered strictly by the rulebook. The petition, which bears the signatures of 26 members of the Assembly, claims that Fubara’s administrative conduct has run foul of the Nigerian Constitution.

During the session, Majority Leader Major Jack presented the specific claims of misconduct to the floor. Following the presentation, Speaker Amaewhule confirmed that the legislative wheels are officially in motion. He noted that the executive will be formally served with the notice within the next seven days, a move that will trigger the next phase of the constitutional battle for the seat of power in Port Harcourt.

While the ADC continues its “careful assessment,” the eyes of the nation remain on Rivers to see if this second attempt at impeachment will reach its logical conclusion or face another round of external intervention.
