Two Perish as Speeding Diesel Tanker Explodes on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

A horrific early Thursday morning commute turned into a tragedy at the Oto-Ijanikin axis of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. A diesel tanker, reportedly speeding near the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), lost control and erupted into flames, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the accident occurred when the truck driver attempted a high-speed maneuver to pass another vehicle. The impact triggered a massive fire that consumed the truck and its occupants.

Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, detailed the cause of the disaster in an official statement.

“Preliminary findings from security investigations indicate that the unfortunate incident was precipitated by excessive speed, as the tanker driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another road user,” he stated.

The speed of the crash left the occupants with no time to escape. Taofiq added: “The vehicle subsequently crashed and erupted into a raging inferno, tragically trapping and claiming the lives of the driver and an adult female occupant.”

As the fire raged, traffic officials already in the corridor moved to contain the situation.

“LASTMA personnel who were actively monitoring and managing vehicular movement within the corridor responded with remarkable alacrity and professionalism,” the agency noted.

The response team immediately cordoned off the area to prevent secondary collisions and alerted the Ojo Unit of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Ijanikin Police Division.

Crucially, LASTMA officers were forced to intervene when bystanders approached the crash site. In a high-stakes standoff, the officials prevented members of the public from attempting to scoop spilled diesel—a move that likely saved more lives by preventing a secondary explosion.

Once the fire was extinguished, the FRSC moved to recover the remains of the deceased, and the charred wreckage of the tanker was towed to clear the highway for traffic.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families but lamented the preventable nature of the crash. He described the event as “deeply painful and entirely avoidable,” and issued a stern warning to drivers of articulated vehicles to adhere to speed limits and traffic laws.

He further emphasized that the agency would not compromise on its mission to protect the public. “The Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to public safety and the sanctity of human life,” Bakare-Oki said.
