Zamfara Introduces Sweeping Education Reforms as Gov. Lawal Signs Executive Orders, Launches National Curriculum Distribution

Governor Dauda Lawal has unveiled an ambitious package of education reforms aimed at overhauling the administration, funding and safety of schools across Zamfara State, signing a series of Executive Orders to strengthen governance and improve learning outcomes.

The reforms were announced on Tuesday at the Government House in Gusau during a meeting with education stakeholders, where the governor also flagged off the distribution of the national curriculum to public schools across the state.

According to a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the Executive Orders establish a broad policy framework covering education financing, school governance, quality assurance, security, student welfare and health services.

The new measures also provide for school feeding programmes, student transportation safety, implementation of safe-school initiatives, classification of schools, regulation of graduation ceremonies, unified examinations, merit-based appointments for school administrators, inclusive education, and expanded focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as digital learning.

Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal described education as the foundation for sustainable development and national progress, saying the reforms were designed to reposition the sector through stronger institutions rather than isolated interventions.

“It is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world,” the governor said.

He explained that the Executive Orders represent a comprehensive roadmap for transforming the state’s education system by improving accountability, governance and learning standards.

“Today, we are turning that commitment into concrete institutional reforms by signing and presenting these Executive Orders. These are not isolated directives. Together, they constitute a comprehensive governance framework designed to strengthen school administration, improve accountability, protect public educational assets, enhance financing, promote safety, raise educational standards, improve learning outcomes and prepare our children for the demands of the twenty-first century,” Lawal stated.

The governor observed that previous education interventions had focused largely on infrastructure, stressing that sustainable improvement requires institutional reforms that address governance, teaching quality and effective service delivery.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, underscored the need for collective responsibility in implementing the reforms, noting that meaningful progress in education requires active collaboration among all stakeholders.

He said governments, teachers, parents, traditional institutions, local communities, development partners and the private sector all have critical roles to play in ensuring the success of the new policies.

“These reforms will not end with policy documents,” Gajam stated. “They will be reflected in safer schools, stronger governance, healthier learners, improved teaching, better educational outcomes, and greater public confidence in our education system.”

The latest reforms form part of the Zamfara State Government’s broader efforts to strengthen the education sector through improved governance, enhanced accountability and policies aimed at expanding access to quality education while creating a safer and more inclusive learning environment for pupils across the state.
