Wema Bank Unveils New Leadership Team Ahead of Strategic Growth

Wema Bank, a pioneer in digital banking and the creator of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, has announced key leadership appointments to drive its next phase of growth. The Board has approved the appointments of a new Deputy Managing Director and an Executive Director, effective December 1, 2024, following the upcoming retirement of Deputy Managing Director Mr. Oluwole Akinleye on November 30, 2024.
Mr. Akinleye, who has served Wema Bank with distinction for over a decade, leaves behind a legacy of exceptional leadership and transformative achievements. During his tenure, he spearheaded critical divisions, including the Southwest Business, Corporate Banking, Customer Experience Management, and Corporate Sustainability.
Under his guidance, Wema Bank solidified its market presence and advanced its strategic goals.
In a statement, the Board of Directors commended Mr. Akinleye for his outstanding service. “Mr. Akinleye’s dedication and strategic foresight have been instrumental to Wema Bank’s transformation journey. We deeply appreciate his invaluable contributions and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
To ensure a seamless leadership transition, Wema Bank has named Mr. Oluwole Ajimisinmi as the new Deputy Managing Director. Mr. Ajimisinmi, who joined the bank in 2009 as Company Secretary/Legal Adviser, became an Executive Director in 2020. With extensive expertise in corporate governance, strategic leadership, and banking, he is expected to guide the bank’s continued evolution in the competitive financial landscape.
The bank has also appointed Mr. Olukayode Bakare as Executive Director. A recognized authority in finance and treasury management, Mr. Bakare has played a pivotal role in advancing Wema Bank’s Treasury, Wholesale Funding, and Global Trade Business. His leadership will further enhance the bank’s ability to deliver innovative financial solutions.
Speaking on the appointments, the Board emphasized Wema Bank’s commitment to building a forward-thinking leadership team. “These appointments underscore our dedication to fostering strong leadership succession. Mr. Ajimisinmi and Mr. Bakare bring a wealth of expertise, passion, and a clear vision for the future. We are confident that their leadership will propel Wema Bank to new heights, ensuring sustained innovation and value creation for all stakeholders.”
With these changes, Wema Bank is well-positioned to reinforce its standing as a leader in technology-driven financial services in Nigeria. The bank reaffirmed its mission to provide cutting-edge banking solutions, promising to continue driving growth and innovation in the industry.
