Six rescued after another building collapses in Lagos

Lagos State witnessed yet another building collapse on Wednesday, as a two-storey structure gave way on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in Alimosho Local Government Area, trapping several residents and prompting an emergency rescue operation.

Six people were pulled from the rubble, including one individual who was trapped beneath the debris. The collapse occurred around 6 p.m., less than two weeks after a similar incident in Ebute Meta claimed four lives.

Confirming the incident in a statement shared on Instagram, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said emergency responders were quick to arrive at the scene.

Omotoso wrote: “A two-storey building has collapsed at 4, Modupeola Street, Mangoro bus stop, Alimosho, Lagos State.

“The cause of the incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., was not immediately known.

“Government officials have launched a probe into the incident.”

According to the commissioner, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other first responders managed to rescue six individuals.

“The LASEMA and other first responders got to the scene in good time and rescued a trapped victim and five others from the rubble,” he said.

He added that five of the rescued victims were treated at a nearby private hospital, while the individual who was trapped and sustained more serious injuries received immediate care from the Lagos State Ambulance Service and was transferred to LASUTH’s Surgical Emergency unit.

“He (the trapped victim) arrived at the hospital in a stable condition and was immediately admitted for further treatment. The 44-year-old patient lives at 10, Olabode Street, Alimosho,” Omotoso added.

The incident has reignited public concern over the recurring issue of structural failures in the state, with mounting pressure on regulatory bodies to enforce stricter building codes.

In a similar event in July, four individuals narrowly escaped death when a three-storey building collapsed along Adeniji-Adele Road in Isale Eko.
