Segun Sowunmi Signals Interest in Ogun Governorship Ahead of 2027

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has formally thrown his hat into the race for the Ogun State governorship in 2027.

Sowunmi disclosed his intention during a virtual interactive session with supporters and members of the press held via Zoom on Tuesday, where he outlined his motivation for seeking the state’s top office.

According to him, his decision to contest is rooted in what he described as enduring development gaps across the state, particularly in key sectors such as security, education and healthcare.

“As a critical stakeholder who has always been there, I have continued to offer support, and at this critical time, I am coming forward with the best ideas for governance in our dear state,” he said.

The PDP stalwart expressed concern over what he termed the absence of policy continuity in Ogun State, arguing that successive administrations have failed to build sustainably on existing programmes.

He also lamented that Ogun has not maximised the vast economic benefits linked to its strategic closeness to Lagos State, despite its location offering major commercial and industrial advantages.

“We need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan, but to work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state,” Sowunmi said.

Turning to the health sector, he criticised the condition of public medical facilities in the state, describing the situation as unacceptable for a state of Ogun’s standing.

“It is a little bit disgusting that Ogun has been embarrassed in terms of interventions in hospitals. If we look at the infrastructure in the oldest government hospital located in Abeokuta, the Sacred Heart Hospital, there is no reason why Ogun should not be the healthcare capital of the South-West,” he added.

Sowunmi also addressed the lingering internal crises within the PDP, noting that the instability has influenced his political calculations.

He said he is closely observing developments across the political landscape and monitoring the activities of various parties, adding that he would make a definitive announcement on his party platform in due course.
