Nigerian Peace Corps Urges Senate to Pass Peace Corps Bill on World Peace Day 2024

Abuja, Nigeria – On this World Peace Day 2024, the Nigerian Peace Corps has called for the urgent passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill to bolster peace-building efforts across the nation.

The organization emphasized the need for a formal legislative framework to enhance its capacity in addressing Nigeria’s diverse peace challenges.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the UN’s Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, ACG Samson Oteh, Ag. Corps Public Relations Officer, highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of peace amid Nigeria’s ongoing conflicts. “Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it requires active dialogue and cooperation,” Oteh stated, urging all stakeholders to support peace initiatives.

Despite its grassroots efforts—ranging from community workshops to youth leadership training—the Nigerian Peace Corps has faced limitations without legal recognition. The pending Nigerian Peace Corps Bill aims to provide the necessary framework for the organization to operate effectively.

“This bill will empower us to train and deploy peace officers alongside existing security agencies, creating a more comprehensive approach to peace,” Oteh explained.

The bill’s passage would not only formalize the organization’s activities but also enhance collaborations with international bodies, allowing access to global resources for peace-building. Oteh emphasized the bill’s significance, stating, “It will be a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to peace and stability.”

As the nation reflects on the theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” the Nigerian Peace Corps urges the Senate to prioritize the bill’s passage, paving the way for a safer and more prosperous future. “In unity lies strength.
