Miss South Africa Contestant Chidimma Adetshina Withdraws Amid Citizenship Controversy

Chidimma Adetshina, a Miss South Africa contestant with Nigerian roots, has withdrawn from the beauty pageant amid a citizenship controversy. Adetshina’s decision comes after the Home Affairs ministry accused her mother of fraud and identity theft, sparking a national debate on her eligibility to compete.

In a statement on Instagram, Adetshina said, “After much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I.” The 23-year-old law student has faced vicious xenophobic attacks on social media since being announced as a finalist in July, with many questioning her credentials due to her Nigerian descent.

Adetshina has previously stated that she was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent. The controversy led to an investigation into her citizenship, which uncovered “prima facie indications” of fraud and identity theft by her mother, according to Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber.

Adetshina’s participation in the pageant has stoked anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa, with many calling for her disqualification. However, others have come to her defense, arguing that she should be allowed to compete. In her statement, Adetshina thanked everyone who has supported her, saying, “I am really grateful for all the love and support I have been shown.”

The Miss South Africa organization has yet to comment on Adetshina’s withdrawal. The final of the pageant is scheduled for Saturday.
