Gov Lawal Commissions $200m Lithium Plant, Says Zamfara Ready for Industrial Revolution

Zamfara State has taken a major step towards expanding its industrial base and strengthening its solid minerals sector with the inauguration of the ZAM Lithium Processing Plant, a facility valued at more than $200 million and expected to generate about 2,000 jobs.

Governor Dauda Lawal commissioned the processing plant in Boko village, located in the Moriki Emirate of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, describing the project as a milestone in his administration’s efforts to shift the state from exporting raw minerals to promoting local processing and industrial value addition.

The commissioning ceremony attracted traditional rulers, government officials, mining investors, industry operators and community leaders, all of whom witnessed the unveiling of what the state government believes will reshape Zamfara’s economic future.

The processing plant forms part of the governor’s economic diversification agenda aimed at unlocking the state’s vast mineral resources while ensuring that more economic benefits remain within Nigeria.

Designed to process lithium and other solid minerals locally, the facility is expected to reduce dependence on raw mineral exports while encouraging manufacturing, technology transfer and industrial growth. Lithium has become one of the world’s most sought-after minerals due to its extensive use in electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy storage systems and modern electronic devices.

The ZAM Processing Plant is a joint venture involving Zam Mining Coal Limited, the Zamfara State Government, Bima Mines and Jinlide Mining Company Limited.

Officials said the project demonstrates renewed investor confidence in Zamfara and reflects the state’s determination to create a business-friendly environment capable of attracting large-scale investments.

Beyond lithium, the facility is expected to process other valuable mineral resources found in Zamfara, including gold, copper and iron ore, creating an integrated mining value chain from exploration and extraction to processing and industrial utilisation.

Equipped with modern mineral processing technology, the plant has the capacity to process approximately 6,000 tonnes of raw materials daily, translating to more than two million tonnes annually.

The facility is also expected to improve mineral recovery rates, increase local value addition and provide opportunities for knowledge transfer to Nigerian engineers, technicians and mining professionals.

Government officials said the project would stimulate growth in supporting industries such as transportation, logistics, equipment maintenance and machinery services, creating a wider economic impact across the state.

Employment generation is another major component of the investment, with about 2,000 direct and indirect jobs expected to be created. Preference, according to project promoters, will be given to qualified residents of host communities.

In addition, the company has pledged to establish vocational and technical training programmes aimed at equipping young people with skills required to build careers in the mining sector.

As part of its corporate social responsibility commitments, the company also plans to execute several community development projects, including the rehabilitation and construction of health facilities, provision of potable water through boreholes and installation of solar-powered electricity systems in surrounding communities.

It further pledged to maintain responsible mining practices by adhering to environmental protection standards while ensuring transparency in its operations.

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Lawal described the project as more than the commissioning of an industrial facility, saying it symbolises a new chapter in Zamfara’s economic transformation.

He said the state possesses enormous mineral wealth and stressed that government has a responsibility to ensure those resources translate into tangible benefits for residents through responsible exploitation and industrial development.

The governor recalled that his administration had committed itself to reforming the solid minerals sector by replacing informal mining activities with a more organised, regulated and transparent system aligned with global best practices.

He assured investors that his government would continue to provide an enabling environment for legitimate mining businesses while strengthening collaboration with the Federal Government to maximise the sector’s contribution to economic development.

Lawal noted that the growing global demand for critical minerals presents a unique opportunity for Zamfara to position itself as a strategic player in the international mining industry.

According to him, the future lies not only in extracting minerals but also in processing them locally, developing technical expertise and creating industries capable of adding value before export.

He also praised the company’s commitment to community development, saying meaningful investments in healthcare, water supply, renewable energy and human capital would ensure host communities benefit directly from the resources found in their environment.

The governor further expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising the solid minerals sector as a key driver of economic diversification, industrialisation and national revenue generation.

Community leaders, traditional institutions and stakeholders at the event described the commissioning of the processing plant as a landmark achievement that could redefine Zamfara’s economic fortunes and establish the state as one of Nigeria’s leading centres for mineral processing and industrial development.
