Corruption: Abure Challenges Tinubu to Use APC’s Broom for National Cleanup

Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has issued a sharp challenge to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to confront the systemic graft hindering Nigeria’s progress.

In a Christmas message released on Friday, Abure utilized the symbolism of the President’s own party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to drive home his point.

Through a statement issued by the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, Abure emphasized that no administration can achieve lasting success if it allows corruption to fester. He drew a spiritual parallel, noting that leadership requires the courage to expose wrongdoing even within one’s inner circle, much like Christ did.

“I called on President Tinubu to use the broom, which is his party’s logo, to sweep away corruption in the country because no government can survive until corruption is fought to a standstill,” the statement read.

The Labour Party chairman did not mince words regarding the current ruling class, accusing many leaders of lacking the selflessness required to govern effectively. He argued that the “primitive acquisition of wealth” by a small elite has directly robbed the Nigerian public of essential services.

Abure suggested that the vast resources currently diverted by corruption could otherwise be used to transform the nation’s landscape through improved hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure.

“Nigeria can only get better when leaders have empathy for common Nigerians by exhibiting selflessness. This will bring to an end primitive acquisition of wealth by a few individuals, resources that would have helped in putting needed infrastructure, building schools and hospitals, among others,” he said.

Abure further contended that Nigeria’s current struggles are a result of a departure from the values held by the nation’s architects. He urged the present administration to look back at the sacrificial leadership of figures such as Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“Until leaders of today imbibe the sacrificial attributes of our founding fathers, including Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Mallam Aminu Kano, among others, Nigeria will continue to struggle,” he warned.

Despite his critiques of the political landscape, Abure offered significant praise for the men and women on the front lines of Nigeria’s security challenges. He called for intensified prayers for national safety and urged the President to ensure the military remains properly motivated and equipped.

“I praise the gallant efforts of our servicemen, the State Security Services and every other paramilitary group for ensuring that peace prevails during this season,” he noted.

Abure concluded by reminding the President that the humility and sacrifice celebrated during the Christmas season should serve as the blueprint for Nigerian governance moving forward.
