The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an attack by suspected Lakurawa fighters on Ungushi community in Kebbe Local Government Area of the state.

The attack reportedly occurred on Sunday morning, with residents saying the assailants surrounded the community and opened fire before local vigilantes engaged them in a gun battle.

Police spokesman, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident while speaking with journalists, but said the command was still waiting for a detailed report from the area.

Rufai said, “The incident has been reported by the DPO in the area. We are still awaiting details of the incident as of the time of filing this report.”

Residents, however, said the confrontation resulted in the deaths of three suspected attackers after vigilantes engaged them during the exchange of gunfire.

Two residents were also reportedly killed in the attack. They were identified as Ali Kaurar Yaku Marshall and Lukman Bawa, a welder.

A vigilante identified as Mustapha Auwalu was also said to have sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg during the confrontation.

He was subsequently taken to the General Hospital, where medical personnel reportedly removed the bullet from his leg.

The latest incident has renewed concerns among residents over the security situation in the community, with calls for immediate government intervention.

Residents urged security agencies to increase their presence in the area, intensify patrols and take measures to prevent further attacks by armed groups.

They also appealed for stronger protection of communities in the affected area, amid growing fears over possible further attacks.
