FG Invites Applications for the 2026 PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme

The Federal Government has officially opened the application portal for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme. This initiative offers high-achieving Nigerian postgraduate students a chance to pursue MSc and PhD degrees at top-tier institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
The announcement was made public on Monday via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Dada Olusegun, the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media. The update confirmed that the “FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships overseas,” marking the start of a competitive selection process for the next academic cycle.
Designed to bridge the skills gap in the energy industry, the scholarship focuses on disciplines directly relevant to the oil and gas sector. According to the PTDF, the program aims to provide students with more than just an education; it is a strategic investment in national development.
In a statement released on the official scholarship board website, the agency noted:
“The 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise, while developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.”
The scheme is comprehensive, ensuring that scholars can focus entirely on their research and studies without financial strain.
For doctoral students heading to the United Kingdom, the PTDF is implementing a “split-site” research model. This collaborative approach allows scholars to conduct their research between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK) and prestigious UK partners such as Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Portsmouth.
The selection process is rigorous, focusing on those who can contribute significantly to the industry upon their return. The agency emphasized that “only candidates who demonstrate outstanding merit and suitability will be considered,” noting that evaluations will hinge on academic excellence, the quality of research proposals, and professional memberships.
Prospective applicants must meet specific criteria to be eligible for consideration:
- For MSc Applicants: A minimum of a Second Class Lower (2.2) degree (though a 2.1 is preferred), a valid NYSC discharge certificate, computer literacy, and five O’Level credits (including English and Mathematics).
- For PhD Applicants: In addition to basic requirements, candidates must submit a five-page research proposal detailing their methodology and data collection plans.
- Essential Verification: Every applicant is required to have a verified National Identity Number (NIN) before starting the process.
The PTDF issued a stern warning against any form of malpractice: “All applicants must ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified prior to application, and multiple applications or submission of falsified documents will result in automatic disqualification,” the statement added.
Eligible candidates are encouraged to submit their applications through the official portal at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng. It is vital to ensure that the chosen course of study is among the approved programs at PTDF partner institutions.
The application window closes on February 27, 2026.
