Two Killed as Mexico Erupts in World Cup Celebrations After Historic Victory

At least two people lost their lives on Wednesday during nationwide celebrations in Mexico City after the Mexican national football team secured a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.

Officials from the city’s health ministry confirmed that a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from asphyxiation amid the massive crowds that flooded the streets following the team’s victory.

Authorities have yet to verify reports carried by local media claiming that a third person also died during the celebrations.

The jubilant scenes erupted after Mexico defeated Ecuador to register its first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986, a result that propelled the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16.

An estimated one million supporters poured into central Mexico City to celebrate the historic achievement, with the largest crowds gathering around the iconic Angel of Independence monument, according to figures released by the city government.
