Trump Says He Would Not Have Welcomed Harry and Meghan Back to Royal Family

United States President Donald Trump has expressed satisfaction over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the United States, while insisting that he would not have welcomed the couple back if he were a member of the British royal family.

Trump made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, about a week after Prince Harry and his American-born wife reportedly returned to Britain from their home in Montecito, California.

“I’m happy about it. I was not a fan,” Trump told reporters, making clear his long-standing disapproval of the couple.

The American president accused Harry and Meghan of showing disrespect to the British monarchy, particularly Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.

“I thought they treated the royal family with great disrespect. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles.”

The celebrity couple is said to be settling back into life in Britain six years after leaving the country for the United States following a highly publicised rift and years of criticism directed at members of the royal family.

While Prince Harry has reportedly made efforts to improve his relationship with his father, King Charles III, who is battling cancer, tensions are said to remain between the Duke of Sussex and his elder brother, Prince William, as well as William’s wife, Catherine.

Trump, who has repeatedly criticised Meghan in the past, said he would have handled the situation differently if he were in the position of the British royal family.

“Maybe I’m different. I wouldn’t have taken him back, right? If I were the royal family, I would not have taken them back,” said Trump.
