An Office Steeped in Tradition
The title of Oloja of Lagos is deeply rooted in the city’s pre-colonial history. Traditionally, the Oloja served as a key figure in the leadership structure of Lagos, acting as a custodian of indigenous authority, customs, and communal values. Over time, the office has remained a symbol of continuity and cultural identity for the people of Lagos.
Within the King Kosoko lineage, the Oloja title carries particular significance, reflecting the enduring legacy of King Kosoko, whose reign remains a defining chapter in Lagos history. The declaration of an Oloja by the family is therefore seen as both a cultural obligation and a reaffirmation of royal heritage.
