Jubilation in Zamfara as Governor Lawal Launches First Direct Hajj Flights From Gusau Airport

Residents of Zamfara State have expressed excitement following the commencement of direct Hajj flights from the Gusau International Airport, marking a major milestone in the state’s pilgrimage operations under Governor Dauda Lawal.

The state government officially began the 2026 Hajj airlift on Friday, May 15, with the departure of the first batch of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for this year’s pilgrimage exercise.

The development is being celebrated across the state as a historic breakthrough, as intending pilgrims from Zamfara no longer need to travel to neighbouring states before being airlifted to the Holy Land.

For years, many pilgrims from the state endured stressful journeys and logistical difficulties associated with departures from airports outside Zamfara, a situation officials said the current administration was determined to change.

The successful takeoff of the first flight from Gusau International Airport is seen by many residents as the fulfillment of Governor Lawal’s pledge to establish direct Hajj departures from the state.

Officials described the exercise as a major step toward improving convenience, reducing travel stress and enhancing the overall experience for pilgrims from the state.

In preparation for the exercise, the state government also issued strict operational guidelines aimed at ensuring orderliness and security around the airport environment.

Authorities warned members of the public against accompanying pilgrims directly to the airport, stressing that only authorised personnel and travellers would be granted access to the departure area.

According to government officials, relatives and friends wishing to bid farewell to intending pilgrims are expected to do so exclusively at the designated Hajj Camp.

The restriction, officials explained, became necessary to avoid overcrowding, ease security concerns and guarantee the smooth coordination of flight operations at the airport.

Officials confirmed that the airlift operations were already ongoing successfully at the airport, with pilgrims expressing joy and relief over the opportunity to depart directly from their home state.

Many intending pilgrims reportedly described the development as a significant improvement in the state’s Hajj arrangements and commended the government for fulfilling a long-awaited aspiration.

The Zamfara State Government, while appreciating residents for their cooperation, praised Governor Lawal for what it described as his commitment to improving public services and religious welfare in the state.
