Investigative Journalist Fisayo Soyombo Arrested During Anti-Oil Bunkering Operation — Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo during a targeted operation at an illegal oil bunkering site in Rivers State. This development follows public outcry over Soyombo’s detention, including statements from the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which described his three-day detention as an infringement on press freedom.

The FIJ, founded by Soyombo, had earlier disclosed on X (formerly Twitter), “The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, for three days running. Journalism is not a crime.”

In a statement released on Friday, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, provided clarity on the situation. Danjuma explained that the arrest stemmed from an intelligence-led operation aimed at dismantling a notorious gang involved in pipeline sabotage and illegal oil connections.

“Recently, intelligence revealed the presence of a notorious gang of oil thieves known for pipeline sabotage and illegal oil connections. In a targeted operation, troops traced the criminals to an illegal oil bunkering site. During the operation, arrests were made, including that of Fisayo Soyombo, who was also detained at the scene,” Danjuma stated.

He further emphasized that Soyombo, along with other individuals apprehended at the site, is currently undergoing preliminary investigations to ascertain his level of involvement.

“The suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigations to assess their involvement. Therefore, Soyombo’s arrest is linked to the activities of these oil thieves in the region. It is important for media outlets to ensure the accuracy of the information they publish,” he added.

Danjuma reiterated the Army’s commitment to combating oil theft and related criminal activities, highlighting the broader national benefits of such efforts. “The Division reassures the public of its commitment to curbing criminal activities, particularly oil theft, in the region, which will ultimately help increase oil and gas production in the country,” he concluded.
