FG Completes Presidential Rewards as D’Tigress Players Receive $100,000 Each

Players of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each from the Federal Government following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.

Team officials were also paid the naira equivalent of $50,000 each as part of the Presidential Reward announced for the squad after securing a record fifth consecutive Afrobasket title.

The National Sports Commission disclosed that the payments were made on September 9, 2026, with the accounts of the beneficiaries credited and all players and officials confirming receipt.

D’Tigress retained their continental crown in 2025, extending their dominance to five successive Afrobasket titles and seven championships overall.

The latest payments, according to the NSC, bring the Federal Government’s promised reward package for the team to full completion.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the commission said the package included cash, three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours.

“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said.

The commission recalled that the players and officials had earlier received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, alongside certificates confirming their national honours.

The documents were presented in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France, and were duly signed by President Tinubu.

The NSC said the cash component was subsequently processed following D’Tigress’ participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.

The commission also provided an update on the Presidential Rewards promised to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their achievements in women’s football.

According to the NSC, members of the Super Falcons have already received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja as well as certificates of national honours.

The documents were presented to the players during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco between July and August 2026.

The commission said the cash component of the Falcons’ reward was expected to be paid before the team’s next official engagements.

Like D’Tigress, each Super Falcons player is entitled to the naira equivalent of $100,000, while officials are to receive the equivalent of $50,000.

The NSC described the reward packages as part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes and recognising outstanding sporting achievements.

The statement said, “This unprecedented rewards to the players and athletes by the Federal Government of Nigeria is in alignment with the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR which places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards top on the priority list.”

The commission commended President Tinubu for his continued support for Nigerian sports, noting that his policies had strengthened its reform programme and efforts to build a sustainable sports economy.

It also acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation towards implementing the reward packages.

According to the NSC, the cooperation among the relevant government institutions enabled the Presidential Rewards to be delivered “in record time within the due process requirements.”
