Anambra Govt Accuses Obi of Undermining APGA, Urges Voters to Reject Him

The Anambra State Government has accused former governor Peter Obi of working against the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), urging the party’s supporters in the state to oppose his political bid ahead of the 2027 general election.
The claim was made on Monday through the state government’s official X account, managed by the Office of New Media attached to Governor Charles Soludo.
In a message directed at APGA supporters, the government alleged that Obi had turned against the party that brought him to power while claiming that President Bola Tinubu had supported APGA at a critical period.
The government’s message read, “A betrayal alert for Ndi APGA. Since 2014, Obi has had one mission: to destroy the party that made him.
“In 2015, while President Tinubu stood with APGA, Obi backed the opposition to bury us. Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home, resist the NDC.’’
The development comes amid the increasingly active political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Soludo had declared his support for President Tinubu in 2025, citing their longstanding relationship and the economic policies of the Federal Government.
After meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the governor told journalists that his position was based on his 22-year friendship with the President and his assessment of the administration’s reforms.
“President Tinubu is my friend; he has been my friend for 22 years now and counting, so you don’t deny your friend. I support him, and I’m impressed by the bold steps he has taken, particularly in the economy and structural reforms. We’re taking the right steps, and we need to stay the course,” he said.
Soludo also described Tinubu as “in high spirits, hale and hearty” and called for progressive political parties to work towards a broad coalition capable of strengthening democratic governance and promoting economic and social development.
APGA subsequently endorsed Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election in July.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, said the absence of the party’s presidential candidate on the Independent National Electoral Commission nomination portal should not be regarded as a breach of electoral requirements.
According to Opara, APGA leaders had reached the decision to support Tinubu after consultations across the party.
He said the party’s National Executive Committee approved the position, arguing that backing Tinubu’s bid for a second term was in the overall interest of the country.
The latest confrontation between the Anambra government and Obi also comes against the backdrop of a disagreement over financial obligations connected to projects undertaken during Obi’s tenure as governor.
Obi recently responded to the controversy, explaining that he had not spoken extensively on the matter because he was mourning his late elder brother and friend, Chief Okey Ezeibe.
He also said he had no intention of returning to the Anambra governorship, even if the Constitution was amended to permit him to do so.
The former governor rejected the description of the facilities and financial commitments as “debt owed by Peter Obi”.
According to him, the obligations largely arose from World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development programmes negotiated by the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements.
Obi argued that the figures being cited should be considered separately based on the amount approved, the amount actually drawn and the outstanding balance at the time he left office.
“The government has combined these distinct categories, added them together, and described the resulting US$123.77 million as ‘loans left by Peter Obi.’ That is an incorrect application of public-sector accounting”, he argued.
Obi also maintained that he did not personally obtain loans from financial institutions or issue bonds on behalf of the Anambra State Government.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Obi nor his representatives had publicly responded to the state government’s latest allegation that he betrayed APGA.
