Ohanaeze Rejects ‘Igwe Ndigbo’ Coronation in South Africa Amid Unrest

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has distanced itself from the controversial installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo na East London” in East London, declaring the title invalid and lacking any legal recognition.

The development has coincided with unrest in Eastern Cape Province, where protests erupted over the coronation. Demonstrators reportedly set vehicles ablaze and looted businesses owned by foreign nationals, with tensions continuing to escalate.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, the organisation expressed concern over the fallout from the incident, particularly reports of violence and property destruction.

The statement read, “We express deep concern over the resulting disturbances, condemn the unwarranted attacks on innocent persons and destruction of property and call on relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent further escalation.”

Ohanaeze condemned the violence and urged South African authorities to take decisive action to restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The group reiterated that the Igbo people are widely known for their peaceful nature, entrepreneurial spirit, and respect for the laws of host communities, stressing that it does not support actions that violate local customs and traditions.

Clarifying its position, the organisation stated that the installation in East London “only amounts to a mere nominal observance since it is not backed by any law.”

It further aligned with the stance of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, noting that it does not recognise the conferment of the “Eze Ndigbo” title outside Igbo land.

Ohanaeze advised Igbo communities in the diaspora to adopt alternative leadership titles such as “Onyendu” for coordination purposes, warning that the use of kingship titles abroad could lead to misinterpretation and tension.

The group also called on Igbo residents overseas to remain law-abiding and respectful of their host nations, while appealing to the government and citizens of South Africa to promote peaceful coexistence.

It concluded by urging calm, mutual understanding, and constructive dialogue among all parties involved.
